Rancho Red Rock

RANCHO RED ROCK
Horse Stables, Horseback Riding, Guided Trail Rides, Lessons and Training Facilities located North of Reno, Nevada
Rancho Red Rock, the only riding stables in the Reno/Tahoe  area to provide Private rides ONLY, is open all year.

You do not ride with strangers. All rides are tailored to your ability and interests.

In the off season,  October to June, our schedule and riding area depends on the weather.

Sometimes even in January, with a little fresh snow on the ground,  we can take you out for a lovely 1 or 2 hr  ride in the winter sunshine. Sometimes it is so stormy that everything is blowing sideways and a person would not even CONSIDER a ride!

Rates remain the same.

  • 1 hr ride....$50
  • 2 hours....$80
  • 3 hours $100.
  • Pony rides, with the parents leading their children on a grassy area  next to the house:   30 min $10.

You are welcome to use the picnic area or  (in cold weather) the kitchen table for a  lunch or snacks.   And yes,  I will make lunches, snacks or home cooked dinner for riders.

Most riders start at Red Rock, where we have an arena and can give you a refresher lesson for a few minutes  at the beginning of your ride.  We also do lessons and beginner rides at the ranch.  You can begin where you are comfortable  and  gradually and move  up to more difficult rides as you learn.

We can ride  up the Pinnacles, a  scenic ridge with fantastic views and rock formations just to the south of the property.  1 or 2 hours.

To the east there is the Sand Hills,  not as steep  but  miles and miles of canyons and views for 30 miles,  We sometimes see wild horses or antelope here. 2 to 4 hour rides.

And we can trailer a short distance to  7 Lakes,  Bedel Flats or the lovely aspen filled canyons near Peavine Mt to the south.

As usual, please make arrangements at least a day in advance.

For rides in the hills, children must be  at least 10, but  we can do lessons and gentle rides in the neighborhood for children as young as 7.

We do NOT take credit cards. Please bring cash or a personal  check. And follow the directions on the web site.    Mapquest is not good, cell phones do not work here.

All the rides are private. We do not take more than 3 riders per guide, so if your group is larger, talk  with each other  as to who rides more...who rides less. Try to make  little groups of 2 or 3 who ride at a similar ability. You can arrange with your guides to all  meet at a "photo  op"  or a suitable place for a snack break.   That way each person has the best and safest possible riding experience.

THANK YOU! HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON!

If you  come from Reno up 395, you can visit Reno's only zoo,  Sierra Safari Zoo

Then 10 miles further up Red Rock Road is the Animal Ark. This is a sanctuary for rescued animals and they have some very interesting interpretive programs.   Like a "wolf howl" evening  in the full moon of summer.

Then you come to Lynn Lloyd's farm, Ross Creek Ranch.  She has  the  the only  official Master Of Hounds in Nevada, has over 100  foxhounds and a full training stable.  She is always happy to show people around.

Then you have Sierra Nevada Alpacas.  This farm is very visitor friendly and has frequent "open house"  days where they show you around and explain all about their animals and the fine fiber they produce.

And then you come to our place....at the corner of Red Rock and Frontier.

If you want to continue your adventure after your visit with us....keep going along Red Rock Rd.  As you pass  through the narrow canyon just before Hiway 395, you will be right close to the brilliant red and white cliffs.   There are many places to pull off and take a short hike to explore.  Watch out for SNAKES!!!!

Then you come to 395, and if you are at all interested in pottery, take a right.  Go north a bit over a mile, look to your left for a row of mail boxes. One says "Great Basin Pottery". Take that dirt road til you are there.  Paul Herman has a fascinating place. If he is there he will show you around.  If not, all the pottery is displayed on rustic shelves out under the old trees and sheds. There are price tags and a box for your check.   He has a hot springs and is in the process of renovating a one time green house.  We have told him he should do very exclusive Medeival Banquets  there. Invitation only. And as part of your meal you take home your place  setting.   Just an idea, this is a favorite place we take visitors.

And then you are back on 395.  Go right.  SOUTH.  You will go right back to Reno...or.....for wonderful sight-seeing, take a right at  hiway 70 and got to Chilcoot, Loyalton, Sierraville.  This is the beautiful Sierra Valley. With it are picturesque towns , stores, cafes. Stop at Wiggins Trading Post in Chilcoot. A real, old fashioned country store.  And at the end of the day you will come back to  Hiway 80 and go east to Reno. Or cross I-80 and take Hwy 267 to Northstar Lake Tahoe.

Fall color is beautiful in the hills around Rancho Red Rock and fall temperatures are mild
