Rancho Red Rock is our home and where we raise our horses.
This summer all the riding horses will be busy at Northstar Stable near Lake Tahoe. fter Labor Day we will be back to offering personalized trail rides throughout the beautiful Red Rock area.
This summer, if you want to go riding up in the pines, it is only about 30 miles west from Reno to Northstar Resort. Please check out Northstar page and do make reservations. All riders must be 10 and older.
At home at Rancho Red Rock, we have our ponies for your smaller children to enjoy, as well as the dogs, cats, chickens, and our young horses. There is a large grassy area near the house where you can lead your child on a pony. Check out the pond for frogs, goldfish and water snakes!!
There are picnic tables under the trees or on the back porch where you can enjoy your snacks or lunch. Lisa, our summer caretaker, will be happy to show you around and assist you with the ponies. Pony rides are $10 for 30 minutes. Stay as long as you like.
MAKE A DAY OF IT!
Here are our recommendations for some other activities in the North Reno area that fit right in with a pony ride and picnic at Rancho Red Rock:
(See Map at right. Click to enlarge it or print it)
If you come from Reno up 395, you can visit Reno's only zoo, Sierra Safari Zoo.
Then 10 miles further up Red Rock Road is the Animal Ark. This is a sanctuary for rescued animals and they have some very interesting interpretive programs. Like a "wolf howl" evening in the full moon of summer.
Then you come to Lynn Lloyd's farm, Ross Creek Ranch. She has the the only official Master Of Hounds in Nevada, has over 100 foxhounds and a full training stable. She is always happy to show people around.
Then you have Sierra Nevada Alpacas. This farm is very visitor friendly and has frequent "open house" days where they show you around and explain all about their animals and the fine fiber they produce.
And then you come to our place....at the corner of Red Rock and Frontier.
If you want to continue your adventure after your visit with us....keep going along Red Rock Rd. As you pass through the narrow canyon just before Hiway 395, you will be right close to the brilliant red and white cliffs. There are many places to pull off and take a short hike to explore. Watch out for SNAKES!!!!
Then you come to 395, and if you are at all interested in pottery, take a right. Go north a bit over a mile, look to your left for a row of mail boxes. One says "Great Basin Pottery". Take that dirt road til you are there. Paul Herman has a fascinating place. If he is there he will show you around. If not, all the pottery is displayed on rustic shelves out under the old trees and sheds. There are price tags and a box for your check. He has a hot springs and is in the process of renovating a one time green house. We have told him he should do very exclusive Medeival Banquets there. Invitation only. And as part of your meal you take home your place setting. Just an idea, this is a favorite place we take visitors.
And then you are back on 395. Go right. SOUTH. You will go right back to Reno...or.....for wonderful sight-seeing, take a right at hiway 70 and got to Chilcoot, Loyalton, Sierraville. This is the beautiful Sierra Valley. With it are picturesque towns , stores, cafes. Stop at Wiggins Trading Post in Chilcoot. A real, old fashioned country store. And at the end of the day you will come back to Hiway 80 and go east to Reno. Or cross I-80 and take Hwy 267 to Northstar Lake Tahoe.
