Our Story

Hi! I'm Terry Kauffman

Our family has been in the business of putting people & horses together for enjoyable experiences for since 1972, when I ran a string of dude horses in the Bugaboos in Canada (and cooked for the lumberjacks and guests at the lodge in the evenings).

I grew up riding horses and ponies in Santa Barbara, California.

Our family operated Northstar Stables from 1975 through 2011, Tahoe Donner Equestrian center for 3 summers in the 90's, Bull Creek Ranch in Verdi 1988 to 1991, and Rancho Red Rock since 1997.

My sons, Leo and Markus, grew up working at the stables, and now are a vital part of the business. Leo is here in his off season.  Markus Co-manages with me year-round and is the "trouble-shooter".  He is a really good rider and has a way with the young horses. He is a mechanic and keeps all the vehicles running. Also available as a consultant to help people with all sorts of questions: Selecting a horse or tack, hauling horses, lessons (our horse or your own), and helping riders plan a safe horse facility at their homes for their horses.

Rancho Red Rock lies on one of the "North Valleys" about 30 miles North of Reno, Nevada.

We love our animals, nature and sharing that feeling with our guests. We believe riding horses can help people deal with the other more stressful parts of their lives.

Before setting out, we give all riders an orientation about horse behavior, tell them about the particular horse each is riding, and answer any questions or concerns. We want you and your horse to have a good experience!
